Intumescent strips, or fire seals, are fitted to the two sides and top of a fire door. When exposed to extreme heat, they expand to close any gaps or edges that may leave the fire door vulnerable to fire and smoke spread.
They usually provide 30 or 60 minutes of fire resistance depending on the fire door specification.

Fire Seals Direct work with a number of industry-leading suppliers, and are Lorient’s largest distributor.
Lorient have a worldwide reputation as a leading manufacturer, producing seals for over 40 years.
Lorient Intumescent Strips are available in a range of styles, colours and sizes to suit your fire doors, and are easy to install within the door or door leaf.
Below, we outline the different Lorient Intumescent Strip ranges available, their use and application to help you find the right one for your needs.
The Lorient fire only seal offers traditional fire protection where no smoke sealing is required, or where a separate smoke system is installed such as a Batwing® seal.
These are suitable for both new build and retro-fit applications, and are available in a large variety of colours to suit.
The Lorient smoke seal brush range is among our most popular intumescent strips. The SS seal features a 4mm polypropylene brush pile which offers fire, smoke and thermal protection.
These intumescent strips are often used in environments such as offices and retail stores.
They provide an adequate level of acoustic containment (23 Rw dB).
The AS range features a single fin instead of a brush seal - this is located along the side of the intumescent strip to provide fire, smoke, acoustic, and thermal protection.
Due to its acoustic properties, the AS seal is suitable for environments such as flats and dwelling houses.
These seals also include antimicrobial protection and are suitable for wheeled traffic, also making them a popular choice for hospitals and care homes.
The DS Twin Fin range offers incredible fire, smoke and acoustic protection for fire doors, with the added benefit of thermal containment.
As it features two fins, this seal provides greater acoustic protection than the AS seal, which has one fin. We recommend installing the DS Twin Fin range in environments such as school music rooms and GP practices where minimising sound from room to room is paramount.
Weighted sound reduction (Rw) - 31dB
Much like the AS seal, the DS also includes integral antimicrobial protection making them suitable for clean environments.
The Lorient TS range is a centre twin fin model that is also similar to the DS seal, but differs slightly in regards to where the fins are situated.
This model is easy to clean and suitable for wheeled traffic, making it an ideal solution for fire doors situated in care homes and hospitals.
The high-class Finesse seal offers the ultimate fire, smoke, acoustic, and thermal protection.
It is very much like the DS fin in terms of its functionality however, it is uniquely designed with transparent fins, making it suitable for luxury installations or upgrading doorsets in heritage projects.
They feature 4mm flexible elastomeric fins that contain integral antimicrobial protection, and have exceptionally low frictional resistance enabling the ease of door operation.
Weighted sound reduction (Rw) - 31dB
Intumescent strips must be rebated within the door or door leaf in order to remain compliant with fire safety regulations.
They come in 2.1 metre lengths as standard, and are easily trimmed down using secateurs.
The width and depth of the rebated groove will depend on the size of the strip itself.
All Lorient intumescent strips are provided with a heavy duty self-adhesive backing tape.
