Soundproof rooms are necessary in a range of contexts. From confidentiality in healthcare settings, to blocking out noise from music rooms or recording studios, or for peace and privacy in shared housing or student accommodation, soundproofing your room is vital. If your door isn’t soundproofed then the noise will escape and render your efforts pointless.
Doors are a notorious weak spot when it comes to soundproofing a room, as the gaps around the perimeter allow noise through easily. However, there are a range of products to choose from to render your door soundproof:
Fire doors are generally a great option when soundproofing a room as they are much more dense than normal domestic doors which are either completely hollow or have a simple cardboard filling inside. Fire doors have a solid core and therefore more mass to block sound.
Once your door is in place, it’s also important to fill the gaps between the door and the door frame when soundproofing a room. We would recommend using a smoke and acoustic seal around the two sides and top of the door, and a drop down seal along the bottom. This means that all 4 sides of the door are sealed and no sound can easily transmit through.
There are a variety of acoustic seals to choose from depending on how your door is being fitted.
Fire and smoke intumescent strips can either be fitted in the door itself or in the door frame. They feature either a brush or fin(s), providing a barrier that sound needs to get through making them a great option when soundproofing a door.
A Batwing Seal® is always installed into the door frame, which means they can be fitted with minimal disruption to the door and can easily be retrofitted.
To seal the bottom of the door, you can opt for a surface mounted or rebated drop down seal.
A surface mounted seal is great if you already have a door in place, however for best results we recommend opting for a rebated one which is fitted into the bottom of the door by routing out space.
To ensure a complete seal, a threshold seal can be added so that when the drop down seal drops, it creates a perfectly clean seal with the floor, and therefore seals as much noise as possible.
At FireSealsDirect we offer a range of acoustic seals, perfect for soundproofing doors.
