Protecta EX Mortar is a specialist dry white powder compound, formulated with inorganic compounds, perlite and gypsum. When mixed with water, it creates a highly effective thermal-insulating fire seal, ideal for preventing the spread of fire and smoke through openings in fire-rated walls and floors. It is specifically designed for sealing around building service penetrations.
Engineered for professional use, this mortar expands by approximately 1% during its hydraulic curing phase, ensuring an exceptionally tight seal around services and the surrounding aperture. It cures to an off-white, load-bearing seal that is simple to sand or drill if needed. Protecta EX Mortar is suitable for use with most common construction surfaces, including concrete, brick, Leca, steel, and plastic. It is not suitable for fitting doors or for openings subject to movement.
Key Features & Benefits
- Fire Resistance: Certified up to EI 240, providing 4 hours of integrity and insulation. Tested in accordance with EN 1366-3 and classified to EN 13501-2.
- Load-Bearing: High mechanical resistance makes the seal load-bearing without the need for additional reinforcement in many applications.
- Acoustic Insulation: Significantly improves acoustic performance, achieving up to Rw 64 dB for linear seals and Rw 48 dB for large seals, helping to maintain the sound design of the building.
- Durability: Classified as Type Z₂, it is intended for internal use in conditions with humidity lower than 85% RH and has an assumed working life of 30 years.
- Fast Curing: The mortar is fast-drying and sets in approximately 1 hour, allowing for quicker project turnarounds.
- Air Permeability: Tested to EN 1026, it creates an excellent air, smoke, and gas-tight seal, crucial for compartmentation.
- Wide Application: Suitable for sealing apertures in rigid walls and floors, including concrete, aerated concrete, and masonry constructions of at least 100mm thickness.
- Approvals: Carries CE and UKCA marks, with performance declared in UKTA 0843-UKTA-22/0033 and ETA 22/0748.
Application Guidelines
The product is simple to mix and apply, leaving a smooth finish. No priming is required on most substrates, but any metal services in direct contact with the mortar must be protected against corrosion. The fire performance is based on the seal being left to cure for at least one month.
