Fire Door Strips

Fire door strips are the seals fitted around the edge of a fire door or frame that keep a certified door performing as tested. Under heat, intumescent material expands to close the perimeter gap and block flame spread; brush or fin seals work alongside them to hold back cold smoke at ambient temperatures.

Browse intumescent strips for fire-only protection, smoke seals for cold smoke control, and combined fire and smoke variants — available from Lorient, Pyroplex and other leading manufacturers in widths from 10mm to 30mm to suit FD30 and FD60 doors.

Choosing the right fire door strip

Every certified fire door relies on a perimeter sealing system to perform as tested. The door leaf itself can hold back fire for 30 or 60 minutes, but without the correct strip fitted into the edge of the door or frame, hot gases, flame and smoke would escape through the perimeter gap long before the door leaf failed. Specifying the right product — and fitting it correctly — is what turns a fire door blank into a compliant FD30, FD30s, FD60 or FD60s assembly.

Intumescent strips, smoke seals and combined seals

There are three broad categories of fire door strip, and the right choice depends on the door's classification:

  • Intumescent strips expand rapidly when exposed to heat, sealing the gap between door and frame to prevent flame and hot gas spread. Used on FD30 and FD60 doors where smoke control is not required.
  • Smoke seals use a brush, fin or pile to block cold smoke at ambient temperatures, before any intumescent has had a chance to activate. They can be fitted alongside a fire-only strip or as a standalone product for draught and acoustic control.
  • Combined fire and smoke seals integrate both functions in a single product — an intumescent core with a brush or fin attached — and are required for doors designated FD30s or FD60s (the "s" denotes smoke).
